Introduction Originally known as Bulhook Bottoms, Havre is the county seat of Hill County. Havre is Montana’s eighth largest city covering a total area of 9.0 km² and lies at the center of Montana’s “Hi-line”. As the largest city of Hi-line, Havre is the focal point of commercial activity in the area. It serves as a wholesale distribution and retail center for communities within 150 miles.
Many well paying jobs are provided by the the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Havre is also the location of Montana State University-Northern, the only College in the Hi-Line area.
The city of Havre is surrounded by the Milk River, golden wheat fields and the rising peaks of the Bear Paw Mountains. The peaks of Mount Baldy, Bates and Otis have elevations of 6,000 to 7,000 feet and are all within 20 minutes of Havre. The Milk River provides for some decent warm water fishing in spots.
