Introduction Butte is a city in Silver Bow County and was named after a nearby peak. The city was founded in the 19th century and was a mining town ever since. At first only gold and silver were mined in the area but gradually with the advent of electricity, the demand of copper also increased. Butte soon became one of the richest cities of Montana covering a total area of 1,856.5 km² (716.8 mi²). It is also home to one of the largest deposits of Bornite.
The climate of Butte is seasonal with cold winters. Mosquitoes become a nuisance during the summer months especially in the lake and river areas.
